HW 2/26

This is an article about abortion and pro-life https://twitter.com/ControVision/status/306515296380911616
The article is mostly about being pro-life and not pro-choice. The author is stating opinions but they are also making an argument to why their opinion is right. She did no go by much but she stated that, “Is this what freedom and personal choice equals when violence begins against the smallest and most defenseless humans of our nation and is even endorsed and allowed by our government?” Not only does she make a valid point but she uses emotional points in her article. She mentions God (Christianity), which would have a lot of impact on the ones who are religious but mostly the ones who are Christian. The ones who are not religious would seem offended however she uses the word, murder, to explain her point. You could take this whole article as a logical fallacy just because she place religion in it. Also, she said that people do not know the lines of right and wrong, however right and wrong could be different for anyone depending what they grew up to believe.

HW 2/14

The presearch process made me think of ways I could narrow my topic even more. I think I need to really narrow it because media is a huge field and if I could stick to one media item I could find more facts or information on it. My research question was “Is media in the U.S. too light on censoring language and adult content?” This seems too broad so I’m going to narrow it to, “How has the change of TV. Censorship affect the youth of today in America?” I narrowed my topic from media to television because young children cannot read an article but they can all watch something on the television.  And also I said “change,” which can help me find more information for my research topic. I can find old articles on television shows that had issues with censorship and compare them to today’s issues with television censorship. I checked out the book Media, Children, and the Family HM258 .M3743 1994

HW 2/12

This research process is different than how I usually do research but also a little bit the same.  I’ve used a libraries search engine to find books I needed for research projects but I have never really used the GIL-find. I have never used the advanced search before but it seems to be helpful but also aggravating because it is so sensitive to your words. Using Google in the past would always have something related to what I typed in, however, not everything is reliable on Google. I am not really confused about anything thus far that we covered in class because I knew it previously before the class.  I do wish however  that we would talk about going to locate the books related to our topic or finding other resources available in the library that may not be a book or a specials collection resource.

HW 2/7

For this class I could look up old magazines from the special collections to research on my topic of censored media. I can look at the difference of the past to the present day and see how they have changed. I can look at ads that are the same today and compare how they are presented in the article or magazine to see the changes from time. I could use special collections resources for other research papers in other classes such as history or English. Special collections have content that may not be accessible through the internet.  Special collections are an important part of the research process because you could always look up content that use to be available only in the past. Such things as old photos or old novels, that are not available to the public. They have things that you may not have even heard about that you could use in your research paper for facts.
